Wedding Cake Madness – Beach Style
| November 29, 2011 | Posted by Cait @ Beyond Bananas under Wedding |
Yay for DOGS!! Thanks for all of your sweet comments on yesterday’s post! Justin and I have spent a lot of our time “puppy-proofing” our home! He is excited that I can’t drop my bags as soon as I come in the door… or leave chocolate on the table anymore. I am excited that he can’t pile up boxes next to the garbage can or leave his computer cord strung across the room anymore!
But enough dog talk.. for today anyway. Today, I have Kate Wilson writing a post on beach inspired wedding cakes. She blogs over at Wedding Clan – and the site is actually quite unique – with lots of tips … and forums for brides to be to bounce ideas off of one another. If you ask me.. I can never look at too many bridal websites.. so I had a great time checking out Wedding Clan!
Get a perfect Beach-Inspired Cake with these tips
Beach weddings are becoming quite popular and catching the fancy of many couples. Choosing a cake for your wedding is an arduous task. With a beach wedding, you cannot fall short of themes for the cake. The sun, sand and azure water are a great inspiration to come up with merry designs for the wedding cake. The mystical sea and charismatic colors on the beach will stir up ideas aplenty. Here are few tips for having a beach-inspired cake.
1. Flavors
Fruity flavors like pineapple, passion fruit, mango and coconut are a good choice. Subtle taste of vanilla, white chocolate or cream cheese is a good idea too. Tangy lime flavors are also quite beachy. Citrus fruits like oranges and lemons are appropriate. Buttery flavors that melt in the mouth are absolutely sumptuous. Try butter cream or butter scotch. Celebrate by adding light boozy hints to your cake.
2. Colors
Hues from the sandy beaches and azure water like white, ivory, light yellow and sandy beige are excellent. Sea green and light blue frosting or décor on the cake looks great. Touches of muddy brown and silvery white also go well. Luxurious cakes with pearls and pricey décor can have a brushing of lustrous tints also. Combo of nautical blue and white looks nice. Minty green reminds you of the lush vegetation around the sea shore. Those who love colors can go for a hot pick or fiery orange also. Team red and white together. Other hues you can pick are turquoise, sunny yellow, navy, and fuchsia.
3. Add ons
Shells and conches are a must have, you can draw out icing in the form of crabs, star fish, dolphin, oysters. Ornamentation with pearls looks magnificent. Flowers made of cream or sugar look good. Good blooms to choose from are orchids, hibiscus, etc. Using dried or fresh flowers adds to the charisma. Coral motifs are also suitable. With gum paste and sugar make ships, boats, waves, sand castles, or anchors to place right on the top of the cake. Slices of tropical fruits on the top especially glazed with sugary syrups will be delicious.
4. Shapes
Sea styled décor on traditional shapes like circles, heart and ovals will match up with the beach theme. A three tiered cake with sea inspired décor looks really grand. But you can get innovative with cakes in the shape of ships, conches, sand castles, etc.
5. Themes
Go for the favorite floral or fruity theme and adorn the cake with tropical fruits and flowers. Sea inspired designs like ships, waves, seashells and sea creatures are terrific. An island theme with sand, sea, rocks, huts, umbrella shades, palm trees will make the cake look choc a block. Pick a rich pearl theme and have the cake decorated with pearly dot patterns. Get groovy with fiction and fantasy characters like mermaids, sea creatures, underwater kingdoms, etc.
The fruits and flowers on the beach are really appealing on the cake. The blue ocean with its many wonderful creatures helps to enthuse many ideas. There are a bounty of colors and flavors to choose from for beach wedding cakes.

Ours was three-tiered, alternating square-circle-square, with an old fashioned chantilly lace icing pattern. Classic and elegant.

Sounds so pretty! I like the idea of alternating shapes!
Is it sad that I can’t really remember what our wedding cake looked like? yeah. that is sad. It TASTED amazing. I do remember that.

I love the cakes that have ribbons to look like presents. Multi-layered of course – that way you get a variety of flavors.
Cake sampling must be the best part of getting married.

Yes, ribbons are so sweet! Simple enough, but put an awesome touch on the cake!
My cake was definitely beachy. It was a 3 tier cream colored cake. It had buttercream frosting with pearly colored fondant shells. We also had some crushed graham cracker ( i assume) that looked like sand. Our cake topper was 2 adirondack chairs. We LOVED it.

I don’t even know what I want my cake to be like but definitely pretty! It doesn’t have to be huge, but just something that I will love when I look at it. Almost a too pretty to eat cake ;D
Yes! I think the big cakes are a little much!! Ours is included in our package… so it takes a LITTLE bit of the leg work out!
Our cake was a three tiered, round cake. It was red velvet cake, with vanilla custard filling, and cream cheese frosting. The frosting was cream colored with a light shimmer to it, and our flowers were added to the cake to decorate it.
Choosing the style and flavors of our cake was so overwhelming to me. There’s so many options! Not only that, but I honestly had no clue what I wanted at first. After spending lots of time looking at cake photos, I decided. I was so happy with how it turned out!

You have my mouth watering!!! I honestly have no idea what we want.. but we don’t have an overwhelming number of options. Cake ISN’T may favorite dessert.. so I want it to look nice a pretty.. and taste good.. butI am no connoisseur though!
Oooh, I love the sound of the beachy flavoured cakes – pineapple and coconut, yes please!
Our wedding cake was a small victoria sponge on top of a tier of cupcakes – half lemon sponge with white butter icing and a purple sugar flowerr, half coffee sponge with purple rose-piped butter icing. A local bakery made them for us and did such a great job!
COFFEE SPONGE?! Coffee is honestly one of my FAVORITE flavors every! That sounds AWESOME!
Wedding cake tasting is SO fun! You get to try so many yummy flavors!
Mine was almond cake with raspberry filling! people still rave about how good it was!!!

Oooh Sounds absolutely delicious!! I can’t wait until we get ours nailed down!
I’m not a huge fan of cake… but I die for Strawberry Shortcake! So if I could choose something kind of different for my wedding, it would be that

AW! That is SO freakin’ cute! How special. THat will be something so sentimental to always look back on!!!
I’ve never giving much thought to what kind of wedding cake I would have since I don’t want a big wedding, but I love cakes with many different colors. Have you seen those crazy ones where each section is completely different kind of cake? I think a cake with fresh fruit would be cute for a wedding.

Yes! Those look awesome. I don’t think ours will be like that. I honestly don’t know if we will be allowed to change it up. Personally.. cake isn’t too important to me either. That is why it isn’t abig deal that we have limited options and it is included in our reception package.
I think my ideal wedding cake would be red velvet. But I’m honestly in LOVE with cake and think about my favorite cake flavors all the time. Is that weird?

Melissa recently posted..When I Drive Myself, My Light is Found…
No. Nothing that has to do with thinking about cake.. or any type of food is weird. AT ALL.
We had a little, one-tier (hexagonal!) cake for us to cut into, but we had three different kinds of cupcakes for our guests–red velvet, chocolate, and vanilla fudge. The frosting was all in our colors, teal and brown.
Planning–and tasting–the cake is one of the most fun parts!
Katie recently posted..Gnocchi Mac and Cheese
I’ve seen a lot of cupcake spreads that look amazing. Since our place comes with a cake from a great bakery.. we are all over that .
Great wedding cake ideas especially for those who have beach-themed weddings. With the right flavour, colour and add-ons, you’ll have your dream wedding cake.
